Magic: The Gathering Lead Designer Talks About Possibility of Banning Cards in Vintage

Since many Magic: The Gathering players seemed concerned about the dominance of the new Companion cards from Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths in multiple formats, several members of the Magic community are bringing up the possibility of banning cards like "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" or "Gyruda, Doom of Depths" in eternal formats, but will Wizards of the Coast actually ban these cards they just released in the latest set?

According to lead Magic designer Mark Rosewater, the possibility of banning cards in Vintage is possible "if necessary". This is his response to a fan's question posted on Rosewater's Blogatog about the possibility of Companion cards being banned in Vintage because restricting it to only one card won't balance it completely since you usually only need one copy of a Companion card to make the deck's strategy work.

Over the past week, MTG fans have been concerned about the dominance of Companion cards across various formats. The new mechanic seems to be busted as Companion cards, especially "Lurrus of the Dream-Den" dominated recent online tournaments, taking over the meta on MTGO:

MTG pro player and streamer Jim Davis recently released a YouTube video explaining the problem of Companion cards and proposed a solution to make them more balanced:

There's no doubt that Companion cards from Ikoria are making a huge impact on eternal formats like Vintage, Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, but will Wizards ban them? If they continue to dominate, it's likely, but I think I agree with what Jim Davis said in his video. Probably changing the rule of Companion would balance it more. However, that will most likely never happen.
