Magic: The Gathering Designer Talks About the Upcoming MTG Netflix Series

Wizards of the Coast's popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering is getting an animated adaptation on Netflix, and last December, a placeholder on the streaming platform confirmed that it's coming next year. The project, executive produced by the Russo Brothers team with writers Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina, was announced last June, and it will tell "an animated new story of the magic-wielding Planeswalkers."

During a larger interview about the upcoming Unsanctioned procut for Magic: The Gathering, Cracked.com asked Magic head designer Mark Rosewater about the upcoming MTG Netflix anime series, and while he didn't share any details about the upcoming series.

"People will throttle me if I actually give you details, but I can say this: I'm about a fan of Magic as there can be," Rosewater told Cracked. "I have a lot of emotional investment in this existing and being good. We have a top-notch team working on this. Literally, [the show's executive producers, the Russo Brothers of fame] directed the highest-grossing movie of all time, and their next project is working with us! I think the audience is just going to adore it. I think it's something that'll bring people who don't know Magic to Magic, which is really exciting."

The new animated series is being produced by the animation network and studio Octopie with writers Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (The Tick). Members of the Gatewatch like Chandra and Jace are said to be involved in the show's storyline, but they haven't revealed any plot details yet. You can check out more details about the upcoming series here.

Netflix hasn't announced an official release date yet, but it's expected to be released sometime in 2021.
