Magic: The Gathering Bans Cards For Depicting Racism

Magic: The Gathering publisher Wizards of the Coast has removed cards depicting racism from its game. Seven cards are now banned in sanctioned tournament play, and their images will be removed from Magic's official online database, WotC said in a statement.

"The events of the past weeks and the ongoing conversation about how we can better support people of color have caused us to examine ourselves, our actions, and our inactions," Wizards stated. "We appreciate everyone helping us to recognize when we fall short. We should have been better, we can be better, and we will be better."

Wizards banned the following cards that depict racism: Invoke Prejudice, Cleanse, Pradesh Gypsies, Stone-Throwing Devils, Imprison, Crusade, and Jihad.

One of the cards, Invoke Prejudice, shows a hooded executioner with a black axe. "If opponent casts a Summon spell that does not match the color of one of the creatures under your control, that spell is countered," the card's text reads.

"We have removed this card image from our database due to its racist depiction, text, or combination thereof," Wizards said. "Racism in any form is unacceptable and has no place in our games, nor anywhere else."

I'm glad WotC is taking efforts to erase racism from Magic. Do you think there are other Magic cards that deserve to be banned in Magic? Let us know in the comments section below.
