Magic: Legends Cancelled "For Poor Financial Performance", Reportedly "Laid Off 44 Employees"

On Tuesday, Cryptic Studios announced that Magic: Legends, the ARPG featuring the Magic: The Gathering Multiverse, is shutting down. The news comes just months after its PC open beta was launched, so Magic: Legends is not getting a full release in any platform as planned.

Magic: Legends Executive Producer Steve Ricossa announced the cancellation on the game's official website. "It is with heavy hearts that we announce Magic: Legends will be shutting down on October 31, 2021," Ricossa wrote. "All players who spent money in-game across Arc and the Epic Games Store during the Open Beta will be refunded their full purchase amounts. Servers will remain open for play until closing day, however we will be closing the Zen Shop effective immediately."

Walz, a former Audio Producer, Senior Sound Designer for Magic: Legends, recently tweeted the "devastating news", stating that Cryptic Studios decided to cancel the game for "poor financial performance", and that 44 employees were laid off on Tuesday morning.

Walz went on to say that the rest of the audio department is safe because they don't work on Magic, but he was in charge of Magic, so that's why he was "eliminated" However, he said that Cryptic handled it very professionally.

Since Magic: Legends PC open beta launched last March, it received a lot of negative feedback, including Day9's 0 out of 10 rating, so the news of the ARPG shutting down was expected.
