Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Mugen Train continues to dominate the global box office with another box office milestone. While Demon Slayer hasn't taken the top spot as the highest-grossing Japanese anime series in the U.S., it has surpassed the fan-favorite shonen feature film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
The anime film, which is a direct sequel to Season 1 of the television series, was recently released in U.S. theaters, and this past weekend marks its second stateside, taking down Mortal Kombat to take the top spot. Now, Demon Slayer has surpassed Dragon Ball Super: Broly's U.S. box office records.
According to box office total, Demon Slayer earned over $34 million USD to date, beating Dragon Ball Super: Broly's $31 million, making it the third highest-grossing anime film in the U.S.
There are still two Japanese anime films with higher domestic box office records than Demon Slayer: the two Pokemon films: Pokemon: The First Movie and Pokemon: The Movie 2000. Pokemon: The 1999 film Pokemon: The First Movie earned $85.7 million, and Pokemon: The Movie 2000 earned $43.7 million.
Demon Slayer may not have surpassed the two Pokemon feature films, but it's already the top-grossing film in Japan to date, grossing $369 million USD in the country, and grossing $473 million globally. Not even the COVID-19 pandemic can stop Tanjiro and the gang.
