Magic: The Gathering Designer Talks About How Commander Legends is Making White More Powerful

Many Magic: The Gathering players would agree that white needs more support in the Commander, and the game designers at Wizards of the Coast are aware how underpowered the color is in the fan-favorite format. However, Commander Legends, the upcoming Commander set and the first-ever designed to be drafted, aims to fix that problem by printing brand new white cards that are expected to be staples in white Commander decks.

Senior Magic Designer Gavin Verhey recently took it to Twitter to explain how the new white cards in Commander Legends will help raise the power level of white in Commander. Verhey pointed out four of the most powerful white cards from the set: Keeper of the Accord, Promise of Tomorrow, Court of Grace, and Armored Skyhunter.

He says that " Keeper of the Accord is VERY strong. Promise of Tomorrow & Court of Grace are card advantage that play to white's strengths. Skyhunter is card advantage and free casting in one!"

"Long term, I'd expect a couple of these to be staples in average power level, and others to show up occasionally," Verhey added. T"hey won't all hit. But these are examples of what this set is doing. As mentioned earlier, it's a gradual process. We can also learn from these for future cards."

It looks like Commander Legends is sticking to the promise Verhey made about white back in September. With all the cards revealed for the new set so far, it looks like white will get a lot of good cards that will raise its power level in the long term.

Commander Legends product and events will be available on Magic Online on Thursday, November 19, 2020. The tabletop version will be released on Nov. 20.
