Magic: The Gathering Demonic Tutor Seller Will Enjoy Retirement

Les Osborne recently sold five original Magic: The Gathering paintings from the 1993 Alpha set at Heritage Auction for a combined total of $483,600, including the Demonic Tutor art illustrated by Douglas Shuler which was sold for $168,000. It looks like the art dealer is happy with the auctions' profits, and says that she is going to enjoy retirement.

"Did the artwork sell for as much as I hoped it would? Not quite. Did my $4,000 investment from ten years ago increase a hundredfold? Yes, it did, so why would I be upset? For me, I'm just going to enjoy retirement," Osborne wrote in the MTG Art Market Facebook group (via ManaEcho).

Demonic Tutor is the most expensive piece of original MTG art sold, after it was sold for $168,000 at an auction yesterday, beating the record of Shahrazad's $72,000 sale from July 2018.

On the MTG Art market Facebook group, people were surprised that the Demonic Tutor piece wasn't sold for a higher price, claiming offers up to $250,000 were made prior, but the art dealer debunked those claims, saying, "No, I had no offers approaching what you are saying, that is why they ended up on Heritage Auctions."

Heritage Auction also sold four other original art from the Alpha set, including Contract from Below sold for $78,000, Jayemdae Tome sold for $114,000, Mana Flare sold for $78,000, and Fear sold for $45,600.
