Magic: The Gathering Community Defends Power Level of A New Commander Legends Card

When Wizards of the Coast officially revealed one of the most powerful cards from Commander Legends, the upcoming Magic: the Gathering Commander set and the first-ever designed for Booster Draft, fans of the popular card game took it to social media to talk about its power level. That card is called Jeweled Lotus, a 0-to-cast Artifact that can be sacrificed to produce three mana of any color to cast a Commander spell.

The mythic rare card resembles the most expensive Magic card, Black Lotus. Although Jeweled Lotus is not as powerful as Black Lotus, many fans are already saying that it's overpowered and that it will break the Commander format. However, some prominent members of the Magic community are defending its power level.

Commander Legends lead designer Gavin Verhey said this on Twitter: "I'd go as far to say that Arcane Signet is significantly better than Jeweled Lotus in a majority of decks. In Commander, cards like Dark Ritual - trading a card for quick mana boost - are traditionally not very good. There will be decks where this is strong, but in many it won't."

The Commander Rules Committee said that Jeweled Lotus is not getting emergency-banned in the format, and that they knew it was coming.

Magic Hall of Famer Patrick Chapin also took it to Twitter to say that whoever designed Jeweled Lotus is a genius, noting that it "does not scale all that well" in multiplayer formats, and compares it to the old black Magic card, Dark Ritual.

Shivam Bhatt of the Commander Rules Committee said on Discord that Jeweled Lotus is not better than Temple of the False God.
