2020-21 Season Magic: The Gathering Rivals League Changes Announced

"Due to her impending immigration to the United States and associated work ineligibility, Jess Estephan will be leaving the Magic Rivals League," Wizards said.

Estephan was the first woman to win a Magic Grand Prix, when she won the Team Modern main event in Grand Prix Sydney in 2018. She was the only Australian and only female member of the 2019 Magic Pro League.

Emma Handy will be leaving the Rivals League because she accepted a position working for Wizards of the Coast's Play Design team.

Wizards said that, per league rules, Rivals members who leave the league mid-season will not be replaced."Because both Handy and Estephan have played against some members of the league and not others, we will be voiding all League Weekend match results against them and canceling their future matches," Wizards said. "We believe this is the most equitable way to handle their departure at this point in the season while maintaining even numbers of match wins and being able to accurately calculate tiebreakers."

The 2020-21 League play continues with the January Kaldheim League Weekend, broadcasting live on Jan. 16-17 on Twitch.tv/magic.
