GTA 6 is yet to be officially confirmed by Rockstar, but that doesn't stop fans of the series from clamoring for more information about a release date. While a new GTA is almost as inevitable as death and taxes, the eight-year hiatus since the last game was released, has left us all desperate for news.

Eight years is a long time. While GTA Online has helped to fill the void (and made Rockstar a handsome profit in the process) we have all grown old, numb to the joys of life, as we wait for news. So in an effort to soothe we've pulled together everything we know about GTA 6.

As of right now, there is no official news about a release date for GTA 6. This isn't entirely surprising, given that the game has yet to be confirmed in any official capacity. But there are still some breadcrumbs for us to follow. An article on Kotaku back in April 2020 suggested that Rockstar's next big project was in "early development." Of course, we don't know for certain that this is GTA 6, but it seems pretty likely.

If work only started 18 months or so ago, then it's unlikely we can expect the game anytime soon. Additionally, an SEC filing suggests that the company expects to see an enormous spike in marketing spend between April 2023 and March 2024. This may be indicative of the release window for the next Grand Theft Auto game.

The same Kotaku article we highlighted earlier makes reference to changes in the way Rockstar is intending to approach work in an effort to make life better for its staff. Trying to reduce crunch and work-related stress is a big focus, so the may take longer to reach the market.

There are additional factors to consider as well. GTA Online is still doing extremely well, and with an expected release of a remastered GTA V for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at the end of 2021, there certainly doesn't seem to be any pressing financial need for Rockstar to speed up work on GTA 6.

The difficulty people have had obtaining these consoles also means that the market for GTA 6 will only grow in time, so waiting to launch the game until there's a sizable enough base of users on next-gen could make some sense.

If there is such a thing as a consensus around a release window, then it seems to be pointing towards a 2023-2025 schedule, with a later date seemingly more likely.

The total lack of information from Rockstar or Take-Two means for GTA 6 that there are a lot of rumors doing the rounds. There are a few significant ones.

The first one is that in accordance with trying to reduce the workload on staff at Rockstar, there is a possibility that the game won't actually be that big. This theory suggests that the initial release will be a bit smaller, followed up by a series of additional content drops.

In terms of the game setting, plenty of different locations have been suggested. The rumor that seems to have the most traction surrounds a return to Vice City but in the context of a much wider world. The theory is that the game will allow you to travel between North and South America to complete missions.

There are further theories that suggest the game will span decades and multiple locations, with the story developing across a series of chapters. Some suggestions are that, in addition to the Americas, you will be able to revisit Vice Miami, Los Santos, and Liberty City. Which, in theory, could tie in with the idea of releasing content gradually.

Other rumors have contradicted these ideas, suggesting that the game will have a modern-day setting. The truth is no one knows for sure at this point. But a multi-site game certainly gets our attention.

One further piece of speculation really does stand out: There is a possibility that GTA 6 could end up being the final game in the GTA series.

The speculation is that the world that is being built will be an always-online live service that's continually updated over the years instead of being replaced by a new game. GTA Online has, after all, kept people interested for almost a decade. So this is certainly a plausible suggestion.

But, like everyone else, we're going to have to sit tight and wait until Rockstar finally decides to tell us about GTA 6 before we can say for sure what's going to happen. In the meantime, just keep reading those rumors.
