Fan Theory Explains Why The New Star Wars Movie is Called Rogue One

The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer released yesterday was pretty epic. Unsurprisingly, the trailer also left fans with more questions than before.

Some of those questions include:

> Who is the guy in the white cape?
> Who is the person wearing the black cape?
> and Who exactly is Forest Whitaker playing in the film?

While those questions may not be answered until Rogue One's release in December, there's one fundamental question that could just have been answered by a fan theory posted on the Star Wars subreddit.

The question: Why is the movie's title Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?

Apparently, if you'll believe the theory, the title has something to do with Luke Skywalker and some X-Wing pilots.

The origin? The 90s X-Wing-themed comic book titled Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron.

Apart from the comic's title itself, the narrative of Rogue Squadron is based on the adventures of a group of X-Wing pilots led by Wedge Antilles and Luke Skywalker after they destroyed the Death Star, but before the events of The Empire Strikes Back.

Turns out, it's not just now that the concept has been made popular by Rogue One (if it is what the movie is based on). The comics had been so popular that it was extended for another run including having its own novel and game spin-offs.

The theory on Reddit claims that there has never been no actual explanation why Wedge and Luke's team was named Rogue Squadron and they simply could have been inspired by Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and her team that they used "Rogue" to name their team, that is if Jyn somehow uses the word "Rogue" as a code in the film.

The theory on Reddit went as follows:

Given that the squadron was formed from the remnants of the pilots who destroyed the Death Star, maybe they used the Rogue name to honour the memory of the soldiers who stole the plans, making it possible for them to destroy the Death Star in the first place.

The theory may not be airtight though. Rogue One director Gareth Edwards may have just come up with the title with no reference to the story in the comics whatsoever. Still, it's pretty fun to think that Luke named his X-Wing team from after Jyn's exploits.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
