Wonder Woman 84 Director Patty Jenkins Says Rogue Squadron is Not Based on the Game

Rogue Squadron was announced during the Disney Investor Day by Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. Wonder Woman 84 director Patty Jenkins was hired to direct the upcoming Star Wars film titled, Rogue Squadron. Despite the title of the movie sharing the name of a famous 1998 Star Wars video game, Jenkins stated that her movie will not be based on the ‘90s game.

Jenkins' stated in an IGN interview:

"[In the Rogue Squadron movie] we're doing something original with great influence from the games and the books. There's a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it's an original story and I'm so psyched to do it."

Jenkins will be the first-ever female director to helm a major Star Wars feature film.

Little is known about the project and the details, but the Star Wars canon for the film would have Rogue Squadron as a Rebel starfighter squadron that Luke Skywalker has founded during the Galactic Civil War.

Rogue Squadron was born from the ashes of the Red Squadron. It was the same squadron that took on the Death Star in the infamous 1997's Star Wars. The Rogue Squadron included Hobbie Klivian, Luke Skywalker, and Wedge Antilles. The most notable battle was in 1988's The Empire Strikes Back which was the Battle of Hoth. The Rogue Squadron's exploits were further explored in other media forms such as comic books and video games. The origin of the name was established in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Rogue Squadron will be released on December 22, 2023.
