Shang-Chi Surpasses Black Widow, Becoming The Highest-Grossing Pandemic-Era Movie

The newest Marvel Phase 4 movie, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is on the way to beat the pandemic-era box office record that was previously set by Black Widow. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is expected to surpass Black Widow's box-office numbers in less than a month after its debut.

According to Deadline, Shang-Chi is currently at $183.2 million on Thursday in terms of ticket revenue. It is just $200,000 behind Black Widow's total amount of $183.4 million. The film initially made $94.6 million in box-office domestically over the Labor Day weekend. It was also reported that Shang-Chi led the recent domestic box office with an estimated $1.3 million total from Wednesday.

Even though Shang-Chi was released exclusively in theaters on September 3, Disney recently announced that it will be releasing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on November 12 on Disney+ in honor of Disney Day. This announcement comes months after Disney decided to drop the Black Widow movie both on Disney+ and in theaters, which led to Scarlet Johansson filing a lawsuit against the company, as her shares from the theatrical profits were reduced heavily by the same-day streaming release.

The release of the Shang-Chi movie also impacted the future of Marvel's upcoming 2021 movie releases including those that are not made by Marvel Studios. According to a report, Marvel's Eternals will be receiving an exclusive theatrical release following of Simu Liu-led movie's performance in the pandemic-era box office. Sony also decided to officially move up the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage two weeks from October 15 to October 1.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently showing in theaters.
