As major theaters are still shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Marvel Studios has begun their game planning in case some of their theatrical releases have to make the move to Disney+. This would provide more flexibility to their talents.
As major theaters are remained shut due to the ongoing pandemic, Marvel Studios have made their move on looking at new contract deals for their key talents. The studio has started exploring new talent to have flexibility in the case that other factors or the pandemic would lead the studio to bypass content release on theaters and bring their films to Disney+.
Under the studio's new contract, the above-the-line talents such as the actors, directors, producers, and writers will get an adjusted compensation. It will depend on circumstances like the film opening in the theaters or if it debuts in the studio's streaming service. Marvel blockbusters would likely give bonuses on the kethey talents depending on the movie's box office performance.
The new deal will start with the Marvel projects that are entering the production stage. This will start with the talents of Black Panther 2, which may begin its production in June. The Wrap added that it is unknown whether this new contract deal will affect films that already started or finished production. These films include Black Widow, Eternals, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
There is no confirmation of whether this move will also affect Disney projects that are not associated with Marvel. This may include the Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lion King Prequel, Little Mermaid, and Tron: Ares. All of these Disney projects are expected to begin their production in 2021.
The news on Marvel exploring a new contract deal with its talents came no less than two after Warner Bros. made a surprising announcement about the fate of all their 17 films in the 2021 theatrical slate. Warner Bros. announced that all of their films for 2021, including DC blockbusters will be released simultaneously on safe theaters and HBO max.
Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has quite a busy slate for 2021. Their recent Investor Day saw the announcements on major projects going to Disney+. These projects include WandaVision, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, What If?, Ms. Marvel, and Hawkeye. All these series will be released in 2021.
