Mads Mikkelsen Says It's 'Creatively Stupid' to Copy Johnny Depp in the Fantastic Beasts Role


After the news of Mads Mikkelsen taking over the role of Gellert Grindelwald was revealed in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie after Johnny Depp left the franchise, many fans have begun wondering how the actor will play the villain. Fans are on the lookout if the actor will copy or imitate Depp's interpretation of the role.

In an interview with the Collider, the actor revealed that playing the role of Gellert Grindelwald in the new movie will be his own. He stated that nobody is interested in him going in to copy anything as it would be creative suicide. The actor added that everybody is expecting them to find a different path. For him, there must be a bridge between what Depp did and what he will do. It can be a "certain attitude in certain situations. Mikkelsen stated that copying anything else will be creatively stupid.

Mikkelsen revealed that his interest in the film is just as big and massive as the adventure will be compared to other films where he usually appears. He said that he is a big fan of the Harry Potter universe. He said that doing that level of production budget-wise in Denmark was difficult which is why it is a fantastic opportunity for the actor.

The actor is not a newbie when it comes to Hollywood movie blockbusters. The actor previously starred in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Mikkelsen is also set to join the cast of Indiana Jones 5.

The Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them 3 will be released on July 14, 2022.
