Game of Thrones fans has something to celebrate as HBO Max has finally confirmed the highly-anticipated spin-off to the popular Game of Thrones series with the prequel titled House of the Dragon. The promo video signals that HBO is currently at the pre-production status of the prequel series. The House of the Dragon will focus on the Targaryen family. It will focus on Daenerys Targaryen's ancestors and their reign. The series will be set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. It will feature The Death of Stalin actor Paddy Considine as King Viserys I.

It has also been previously reported that several other major roles in the series have been filled. Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, and Olivia Cooke were among the chosen ones to join the drama. Doctor Who actor Matt Smith will play the role of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys Targaryen (Considine). Daemon is described as a peerless warrior who possesses the true blood of the dragon. Bates Motel actress Olivia Cooke will be playing the role of Alicent Hightower. Alicent is the daughter of Otto Hightower, the one serving as the Hand of the King. Meanwhile, D'Arcy will play the role of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the series.

Based on the Game of Thrones mythology, the Targaryen clan is one of the former Royal houses that ruled the empire and united the Seven Kingdoms. The clan is often followed by three dragons. The family's declaration is ‘fire and blood' which they often use to take over other kingdoms, which spread outside the walls of Westeros.

House of Dragons will debut in 2022 but HBO programming president Casey Bloys revealed to Variety that they are looking for other stories that are set within George RR Martin's fictional world.

In an interview with Variety, Bloys was asked if he thinks the Game of Thrones property can be as big as Marvel and Star Wars for Disney. When Bloys compared the Game of Thrones property to Disney's Star Wars and Marvel, he said:

"Those are fantastic properties that are decades and decades old. I don't know that it would get that big, but certainly, it is a great resource that we have and an amazing world. So I don't think it's just going to be the one [show] for the rest of its life.

The premise of the series will be Viserys' rise to the throne, which causes a division in the Targaryen clan which sparked a civil war across Westeros.
