The petition to remove Amber Heard as Mera in Aquaman 2 has reached 1.8 million signatures. As the calls to remove the actress get bigger, a new fan art shows how Emilia Clarke will look like if she replaces Heard as Mera in Aquaman 2.
After Johnny Depp was removed from Fantastic beasts 3 caused by his legal battle against ex-wife Amber Heard, many DCEU fans wanted the same for the actress. There were fans asking for Heard to leave her role as Mera or have Warner Bros remove her from the role.
The concept for the fan art was created by 'valentinromeroart' on Instagram. The fan art shows Emilia Clarke wearing the hexagonal suit of Mera. The Game of Thrones actress is also wearing an underwater crown. The fan art added a purple color to Mera's suit, giving Clarke's Mera a different look.
Fans have been eyeing Clarke as a replacement for Heard for the role. The reason is because of Clarke's undeniable chemistry with Jason Momoa on Game of Thrones. However, Heard will remain in her role.
Despite the backlash, Heard said that she is still involved with the franchise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heard confirmed that she will return to the role. She also addressed the petitions to have her removed. She referred to the petitions as paid rumors and paid campaigns. She added that social media doesn't dictate the casting decisions as it is not based on reality. For her, only fans made Aquaman and Aquaman 2 happen.
Here is Heard's statement:
"I'm super excited about the amount of fan love and the amount of fan appreciation that Aquaman has acquired and that it has garnered so much excitement for Aquaman and Mera that it means we'll be coming back. I'm so excited to film that. Paid rumors and paid campaigns on social media don't dictate [casting decisions] because they have no basis in reality. Only the fans actually made Aquaman and Aquaman 2 happen. I'm excited to get started next year."
Aquaman 2 is slated to be released on December 16, 2022.
