In an interview with The New York Times, Ridley said that the Black Panther is a great character. Ridley said that growing up and seeing a hero that looked like him made him feel closer to the fulfillment that is felt in graphic novel writing.

In Ridley's take of the Black Panther, T'Challa will receive an urgent message coming from a Wakandan operative. The story is described as "a hybrid espionage-superhero thriller" but it is also about the love between friends.

Ridley revealed that the story is more than escapism and hopes to touch on bigger themes. Ridley added, "We're coming out of a summer where we saw Black people fighting for our rights, standing up, fighting in ways that we haven't had to do in years."The writer said that it is very important to him to work in the series after the tumultuous year where such conversations are discussed with Black people. He said words like love, caring, hope, and regret are used as these are all ‘fundamental emotions' that everyone has.

The comics issue will be released in August.
