In the original Iron Man in 2008, Tony Stark did not easily make it out of Afghanistan after his visit there to show a sample of his technology from Stark Industries, and such went wrong. He was captured and forced to live in a cave where he created the Mark I, the first-ever Iron Man suit he ever made. Since then, he created various models of the suit and the rest was history.

However, in this timeline, such capture never happened and he was never forced to make a suit for his escape, not even having an arc reactor since he was saved, in time, by Erik Killmonger who was there in the same place under the instructions of Obadiah Stane who wanted Stark dead and out of the business so he could take over the company.

Stark, as a way of gratitude to Killmonger for saving him, asked him to be his COO and what weapon he wanted to do. Erik saw this as an opportunity and asked Stark to do a Gundam-like robot. They were thinking about how to power it and when Stark thought of an arc reactor, he quickly dismissed the thought.

It would be powered by vibranium and since they only have the ancestral ring of Killmonger, they had to make a deal with Ulysses Klaue for more. It became a bloodbath where heroes died in the process. In the end, Tony found out about the plan of Killmonger to cross all of them and he melted the vibranium to power the prototype of the sentinel-like robot.

In this alternate reality, he did not create the Iron Man suit; instead, he created a robot powered by vibranium.
