Deadpool Creator Left Out Cable Because of This, and He Thinks Batman v Superman Should Have Done It Too

Deadpool and Cable are virtually two inseparable characters in the comics, but having Cable out of the picture in Deadpool worked for the film.

Speaking to Cinema Blend, Rob Liefeld, the man behind the two characters, explained why he recommended the idea of getting Cable out of Deadpool during the early stages of production. He explained why it would be a huge mistake and how Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice made that mistake.

Liefeld said:

I absolutely recommended that they not include Cable in the origin story of Deadpool because it wasn't necessary. That was on the table of things that were being considered, and I felt like, ‘No, no, no.' Deadpool is a good enough character. He can carry his own movie and doesn't need Cable. Similarly, it's a mistake I believe that Batman v Superman made. They tried to do too many things at once and tell too many stories.

Meanwhile, when Liefeld was asked about the character's possible appearance on Deadpool 2, he was quite resolute in saying that he can't reveal anything for now. However, fans can rest be assured in Marvel's plans for the sequel, which is what Liefeld calls the "Marvel Strategy."

He said:

Where Deadpool came out, [it] gave you this story, and I think they are somewhat following what I'm referencing as the Marvel strategy. Maybe the next movie -- Iron Man 2 gave us Black Widow, and started building.
And Cap 2gave us Black Widow, Falcon, and Winter Soldier, you know? I believe that the fact that we've got the opportunity to build now on what Deadpool… OK, this is corny, they can build on the cable they laid with Deadpool, in the first movie, you know? Those are strong tracks, and so now they continue to build out on that.

Noting what Liefeld said about why Cable was left out in Deadpool, it's hard to argue with his reasoning. Aside from the movie's R-rated comedy, what made it work for Deadpool is that it was focused on introducing the Merc with a Mouth, and now that we know Wade Wilson's history, it's safer to introduce a new character like Cable.

Deadpool 2 is now in its early stages of development. Meanwhile, Deadpool is now available in DVD and Blu-ray.
