Joker Director Discusses Initial Pitches for DC Black Label

Joker may not have been the first rendition of the Clown Prince on the big screen, but it surely has left its legacy having broken numerous records. Despite this whoever, its director Todd Phillips has debunked persisting rumors of sequels but has recently revealed his initial vision for an expanding universe for the villain.

Speaking to the IGN UK podcast, Phillips revealed his vision for what has been dubbed "DC Black," a movie label that the director has previously described during the Toronto International Film Festival as a disconnected extension of the DCEU which primarily aims to explore a particular character. In the same interview with IGN, he shares how there are several DC characters he'd like to see explored, but is not particularly drawn to any of them as much as he has been with Arthur Fleck.

He further goes on to reveal that although Black Label has yet to fully take shape, he initially had a slate of directors in mind and a rough estimate of how long it would run. The director said, "I pitched it as three movies, Joker being the first with me, and then these two other movies, with two other directors. But I don't really want to name them, because then it'll become a thing and I'm pulling these directors into it when I've never even told them about it. It was just me telling Warner Bros. about it."

You may listen to the full interview with Phillips on the IGN UK Podcast. The episode covers topics about the film's early reception, its unique take on Gotham, and more. Some of DC's latest upcoming movies, on the other hand, include Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020, The Batman on June 25, 2021, The Suicide Squad on August 6, 2021, and Aquaman 2 on December 16, 2022.
