Anthony Daniels Hopes to See More Actors Play C-3PO

Regarded as a Star Wars veteran, Anthony Daniels is the only actor to have appeared in every episodic film of the franchise since its release in 1977. And he hopes that one day; another actor would take on the role of everyone's beloved, quick-witted protocol droid C-3PO.

"I surely recognize, I will someday leave the stage," he wrote in the final chapter of his book I am C-3PO: The Inside Story. "I hope I will do so in the knowledge that I have imbued See-Threepio with enough life that, with the love of the fans, he will go on without me."

The book chronicles different chapters of Daniels' life, from living in the shadow of his days in the golden suit after Star Wars to his friendship with Sir Alec Guinness and his struggle to be appreciated in the first trilogy. He also goes into detail about his experience working with JJ Abrams, who wrote the autobiography's foreword.

Speaking in an interview with RadioTimes.com, the 73-year-old actor further reiterated his point about passing on the role of the gold-plated droid, "There are people wandering around Disney theme parks, dressed in rather better suits than mine. They seem to move a lot more easily," he said. "I absolutely admit and accept that. And quite right: he is too good of a character, too big of a character, to die with me. And Disney paid a lot of money for him! You know what I mean? They've got to get their money back somehow."

He also recognized R2 and 3PO as George Lucas' "common man" trope, often seen in pieces of literature.

"Using ‘the common man' as a trope in a piece of literature is not a new thing, that you are given a hero or something you recognize, to hold your hand, if you will, through the story. And how lucky it is that I got that part," he said.

I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story is available on Amazon and other bookstores for $17.49, while Star Wars' next major film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to hit theaters December 20.
