Yesterday, as part of a major press release, Universal Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment, unveiled a brand-new Jurassic World: Dominionposter, which depicts a mosquito resting on what appears to the foot of a dinosaur, beneath a tagline that reads, "It all started here", reminding us that something so small and seemingly insignificant would ultimately lead to the world-altering chain of events that span the Jurassic franchise tens of millions of years later.
Meanwhile, director Colin Trevorrow also shared a picture via his Twitter account, which shows a feathered theropod dinosaur standing next to the enormous jaws of a super predator. This image is now confirmed to be from a five-minute Jurassic World: Dominion preview that will be shown exclusively alongside Fast & Furious 9 in IMAX, which releases on June 24, this month. This comes as part of an incentive to encourage people back into the movie theaters, following the delays of several movies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
When speaking about the preview, Trevorrow said, "Ever since I was a kid, I have wanted to see dinosaurs in their natural habitat. It may have taken a few decades, but with a little help from ILM, Universal and Amblin, it has finally happened." Trevorrow has previously talked about seeing "dinosaurs in their natural habitat" when discussing Jurassic World: Dominion and fans naturally assumed he was referring to seeing the animals roaming around modern-day America, after having been unleashed in the previous film Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but the short film is actually going to take place 65 million years ago, so it's clear that this is what Trevorrow always had planned.
This will be the first time that the franchise ‘abandons' it's modern-day setting to show us real dinosaurs living in their natural setting and true place in time, in a short film that will be set some time during the Cretaceous Period, showing us seven new dinosaur species and the mosquito that "started it all", all to the beat of Michael Giacchino's new score.
Trevorrow has previously said that Jurassic World: Dominion will in many ways be a sequel to all the films that have come before it, serving as a "culmination", which is evident by the fact that we're seeing the return of OG characters Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm. But now it looks like he's taking it to a whole new level, going way, way back beyond the first movie and then some. Trevorrow also went on to say, "This preview is just a glimpse of the film we've made. It's an epic celebration of everything Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton created, and I can't wait to share it with the world next summer." So whether or not this preview will actually form part of the full movie remains to be seen, but it isn't the first short film in the Jurassic franchise, with Battle at Big Rock claiming that title, a mini follow-up to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which was released online to much praise in 2019.
Either way, it looks like we'll finally get to bear witness to a time when dinosaurs ruled the earth...
Jurassic World: Dominion releases on June 10, 2022. The special five-minute preview will be shown alongside Fast & Furious 9, exclusively in IMAX, which hits theaters on June 24, this month. A trailer for the film is yet to be released.
