DC Announces Metropolis Series From Gotham Showrunners

We're getting a new Superman prequel series and it isn't Syfy's Krypton. DC has announced a new series called Metropolis, which will be a part of the company's upcoming streaming service. This is the second live-action series ordered, the first being Titans, and will be worked on by the showrunners of Gotham, which is currently airing on Fox.

According to DC, the series will focus on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor before Superman ever came to the city. That's right, Superman won't be appearing in Metropolis, similar to how he won't be in Krypton. Considering how the series is being worked on by the creators of Gotham, which has taken a radically different approach to Batman's origin, this isn't a huge surprise and should make for exciting television.

While Gotham is a disturbingly dark show that tends to venture into campy territory, Metropolis could have a different tone from its predecessor. Superman's world has always been a bit brighter than Batman's, so a lighter tone is appreciated and should differentiate it from Gotham. Then again, the showrunners can always have a lighter tone while also shaking up the canon, which could divide fans.

Metropolis is slated for a 2019 release on DC's unnamed streaming service.
