The Blacklist Season 9 is just nine days away! Ahead of the crime drama's Oct. 21 premiere, NBC dropped the first official teaser from the upcoming season.

Even though the clip is just 15 seconds long, there's still plenty to dissect from the teaser, especially regarding Red (James Spader) and Ressler's (Diego Klattenhoff) relationship.

If you've seen The Blacklist Seasons 1 to 8, you would know that Red and Ressler have not always been on the same page. But one incident will seemingly link them to each other for life.

In The Blacklist Season 8, Liz (Megan Boone) tragically passed away, and her death will impact the entire team in The Blacklist Season 9.

Since Liz had a special bond with both Red and Ressler, they are two surviving characters who would have the most challenging time dealing with the loss.

So, even though Red and Ressler do not always see eye to eye, it seems they will finally join forces in The Blacklist Season 9.

What Is The Synopsis For The Blacklist Season 9?

Even before NBC dropped the official trailer for The Blacklist Season 9, the network already released a synopsis for the entire season.

"Finding themselves each at a crossroads, a common purpose compels them to renew their original mission: to take down dangerous, vicious, and eccentric Blacklisters. In the process, they begin to uncover lethal adversaries, unimaginable conspiracies, and surprising betrayals that will threaten alliances and spur vengeance for the past, led by the most devious criminal of them all – Raymond Reddington," it reads.

What Happens In The Blacklist Season 9 Trailer?

The 15-second clip opens with Red crying while Liz is dying in his arms. Even though the character's demise happened in Season 8, it's evident that it will still take center stage in The Blacklist Season 9.

In the next scene, a disheveled-looking Ressler talks to Red and reminds him that Liz's death couldn't be in vain.

Previous reports revealed The Blacklist Season 9 would feature a two-year time jump. But even if this is the case, two years is not enough to grieve the death of someone close to their hearts.

Following Liz's death, Red will go on with his life. He will also do everything he can to make sure that he will never cross paths with the team.

However, Ressler seems too desperate. And the fact that he's asking Red for a favor to help avenge Liz makes up for another exciting storyline in The Blacklist Season 9.

What Happened To Red After Liz's Death?

Since two years had already passed when The Blacklist Season 9 premiered, fans can expect some physical changes from Red.

Weeks ago, Reddit users claimed that Red was being hidden away from fans while filming The Blacklist Season 9 so that they would be surprised with how different he looks.

There are speculations that he would grow his beard and hair and that he would lose some weight.

However, the trailer released by NBC doesn't show much difference to Red's appearance. So, it's possible that the fans' speculation isn't 100 percent accurate.

Will Red's Health Problems Be Tackled In The Blacklist Season 9?

Other than Red's appearance, predictions suggest that Red's health problems will finally be explained in The Blacklist Season 9.

In The Blacklist Season 6, Red's mysterious illness was mentioned in the series for the first time. It was revealed later on that his health issues had to do with some neurological problems.

In The Blacklist Season 7, he collapsed in one episode. However, Red's health issues still weren't addressed.

Last season, the lead character expressed his desire to be killed off by Liz. But of course, the latter would never do anything to harm Red.

So, audiences can't help but wonder if The Blacklist Season 9 is finally the time wherein the writers would tackle Red's health problems. Unfortunately, only time will tell.

How Will Donald Ressler Cope Following Liz's Death?

Liz and Ressler had a romantic past. Even though some fans don't think that the two characters are a perfect match, the series' writers have linked the two for years.

In The Blacklist Season 9, fans can expect to see Ressler still struggling following Liz's death.

And even though two years would've already passed, his disheveled appearance in the trailer proves that he still hasn't recovered from Liz's demise.

By the looks of it, Ressler will also make it his mission to find the person responsible for Liz's death. In The Blacklist Season 8, Ressler became convinced that Solomon (Edi Gathegi) had something to do with Liz's demise.

When Will The Blacklist Season 9 Premiere?

The Blacklist Season 9 will premiere on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

It seems plausible that the upcoming season will have a total of 22 episodes. After all, most The Blacklist seasons in the past had around the same number of installments.

Is The Blacklist Season 9 The Final Installment?

NBC has not made an official announcement with regards to the fate of The Blacklist Season 9. But there are rumors that the upcoming installment could be the last.

Earlier this year, Sony Pictures TV President Jeff Frost said that he hopes The Blacklist would continue for more seasons.

"Our hope is that both series would continue… There has been no conversation about it being the final season for [The Goldbergs or The Blacklist]. We haven't gone into this being the final season; our hope is that there will be many more seasons of both shows," he told Deadline.

However, there have also been several instances wherein directors, creators, and network heads have expressed their desire to renew shows, but it just didn't happen.

After all, there are a lot of factors to consider when renewing a TV show. Of course, there are ratings and viewership, among many other factors.
