Bryan Fuller revealed why he chose the title Star Trek: Discovery for the upcoming show at a Star Trek: Mission New York panel, CBR reports. Like most Star Trek properties, the show's name is taken from the ship the story takes placed in. But Fuller reveals that a lot of thought went into naming that ship.
He said there were quite a few reasons the ship was called Discovery. ""Not the least of which is Stanley Kubrick's contribution to the Discovery on ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,' NASA's vessel the Discovery, and also the sense of discovery," he continued.
He also noted the title is about "what the word ‘discovery' means to Star Trek audiences who have been promised a future by Gene Roddenberry where we come together as a planet and seek new worlds and new alien races to explore and understand and collaborate with." Fuller assured fans that the show would both introduce brand new elements, species and locations in the Star Trek universe and also reintroduce aliens, ships and technology from previous Star Trek canon.
Star Trek: Discovery will be focused on a female, human non-captain character known as "Number One". Fuller noted ""There have been six series all from the captains' perspective, and it felt like, for this new iteration of Star Trek, we need to look at life on a Starfleet vessel from a new perspective.""
Star Trek: Discovery premieres on CBS in January 2017 and will move to CBS all-access streaming after the premiere.
