We're only two episodes in and Marvel Studios' What If...? is already shaping up to be one of Marvel Studios' best offerings this year. For the uninitiated, the series sets up multiple what-if scenarios set in the multiverse and its stunning animation and intriguing stories alone are enough to get any Marvel fan glued to their respective streaming devices.
However, not every actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe was able to return to voice their respective characters from the billion-dollar franchise. Some of the big Marvel names not featured in What If...? are Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Elizabeth Olsen, Brie Larson, and Tom Holland which is a shame considering all of their characters appear on the show.
Speaking with Collider, producer Brad Winderbaum finally addressed Tom Holland's absence in the series, and judging by the tone of his statement, they would've wanted the actor to voice Spider-Man in the animated spinoff. However, Tom's contract situation with Sony may have prevented his chances of reprising the role. He explains: "You know, I'm not treated to all the ins and outs of the relationship with Sony. But, I think it may have had something to do with it, yeah."

Sony still has the rights to the Spider-Man character and as it stands, Holland is only contractually obligated to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home so at the end of the day, it's still the studio's prerogative whether they'd allow Holland to be involved in the MCU spinoff show or not. Besides, the Spidey featured in the series is rumored to be a variant of Steve Rogers so there's no point in bringing Holland back.
