Warning: if you haven't seen the latest episode of WandaVision yet, this article contains SPOILERS so read at your own risk.
WandaVision premiered arguably its most emotionally jarring episode yet and it almost felt like Marvel Studios crammed every single surprise they had up their sleeve onto this entry because Episode 8 was home to a lot of jaw-dropping revelations and I'm not even exaggerating.
For the longest time, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were led to believe that the Maximoff twins were initially just normal human beings that were experimented on by Hydra to test the capabilities of the Mind Stone. When Wanda and Pietro made their respective debuts in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it wasn't exactly explained how they got their powers and fans were quick to assume that Loki's scepter was responsible for giving them superhuman abilities.
It's no secret to a lot of people that in the comics, the Maximoff twins were born mutants and since Marvel Studios didn't have the rights to the X-Men back in 2015, they had to tweak the backstory of the twins so all along, a lot of us thought that the Mind Stone was the reason why they have powers.
Apparently, that's not the case as Episode 8 reveals that even before the Hydra experiment, Wanda and presumably Pietro already had their powers even at a young age. When Agatha Harkness took Wanda to see her past in Sokovia, her younger self can be seen attempting to use magic to prevent the Stark Industries missile that hit their house from exploding.
We don't exactly see Wanda dismantle the missile as we jump right through the next scene but she tells Agatha that for some reason, the weapon failed to detonate. However, Agatha insists that Maximoff made use of her magic to put a stop to it.
This stunning new revelation pretty much confirms and dismisses a major Age of Ultron theory surrounding the Scarlet Witch's powers. While Wanda getting her powers through the Mind Stone isn't entirely true, the said Infinity Stone was still somewhat responsible for activating some of her abilities that have laid dormant all those years.
If anything, this could be Marvel Studios' way of retconning Wanda into an actual mutant since they already have the rights to the X-Men franchise. I gotta say, it's a genuinely clever move that I'm pretty sure not a lot of people saw coming. The only question is, could WandaVision's grand finale reveal the truth about the mutants? We'll see.
