Once upon a time, renowned British author J.K. Rowling was beloved by a lot of people who grew up reading her Harry Potter books but things took a different, not to mention ugly turn in late 2019 when the Fantastic Beasts creator's alleged support of transphobia surfaced and went viral.
Since the issue blew up, Rowling has seemingly been unapologetic of her views and naturally, it's rubbing people the wrong way. She even added more fuel to the fire she created by boldly stating transgender teens are being forced against their will to transition and that transgender women are a threat to cis women.
Amid all the controversy surrounding her personal and professional life, Rowling seemed to have found an ally in actor Ralph Fiennes who played the iconic villain Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series. According to Fiennes, he's disturbed by the number of people harassing the author for her personal views.
Speaking with The Telegraph (via ScreenRant), he said: "I can't understand the vitriol directed at her. I can understand the heat of an argument, but I find this age of accusation and the need to condemn irrational. I find the level of hatred that people express about views that differ from theirs, and the violence of language towards others, disturbing."
I mean, sure, everyone's entitled to say whatever they want to say because we're all gifted with freedom of speech but I certainly believe that a person as influential as J.K. Rowling should be mindful of the things she says on her social media platform especially considering that she's a public figure. She also has to take into consideration the fact that she has legions of fans from the LGBTQ+ community that used to look up to her who may no longer be part of her fandom.
