Tom Cruise Reportedly Eyed to Play Iron Man in Doctor Strange 2

It's been a long standing rumor that Tom Cruise was the original choice to play Tony Stark in 2008's Iron Man but negotiations reportedly fell flat and the role eventually went to Robert Downey Jr. and he'd define the character throughout his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But it looks like there's still a chance that we could get the Top Gun actor to join the MCU and play an alternate universe version of Iron Man in some capacity. That's according to a report from The Direct, which claims that insider Daniel RPK got dibs on Marvel Studios' alleged plans of doing a number of cameos for the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Here's what he said:

I have they are considering a bunch of interesting cameos for Strange to play different versions of chatacter we know. One example I heard of they are considering is Tom Cruise as Tony Stark from another Earth (At one point Cruise almost got the role of Stark before RDJ)

Of course, take everything with a grain of salt but can you imagine if Cruise actually fulfills his Iron Man prophecy? That would be hella neat and when you think about it, he has nothing to lose should he take the rumored bait.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits cinemas in Spring 2021.
