There's been a long-running confusion amongst DC fans regarding the true nature of James Gunn's first outing in the DCEU The Suicide Squad. Will it be a direct sequel to David Ayer's divisive 2016 film or an entirely new film? So far, what we know is that the upcoming project will be a "soft reboot" of some sort and will still be canon to the franchise.
Now, one would think that before seeing the highly anticipated film starring Margot Robbie, John Cena, Idris Elba, Joel Kinnaman, and many more, you should go and revisit Ayer's version but interestingly, according to James Gunn himself, there's no need for fans to relive 2016's Suicide Squad in order to get an idea of what's going to happen in his film.
In a recent exchange with a fan on Twitter, the Guardians of the Galaxy shed some light on the fans' bewilderment and assured viewers that even if they weren't able to catch Ayer's film which came out almost five years ago, there's absolutely no reason to get worried.
Reading between the lines of Gunn's statement, this might confirm that The Suicide Squad will indeed be cut from a different mold and be an entirely different project and it looks like it won't have any traces of its "predecessor". What's even more interesting is the fact that David Ayers' 2016 may not be canon after all. What do you think? Are they trying to erase Ayer's version from continuity?
