The Mandalorian: Luke Skywalker's Return Wasn't Part of the Plan According to Jon Favreau

It's been over a month since we witnessed The Mandalorian Season 2's grand finale and a lot of us are still gushing over it mainly because it saw the triumphant return of Star Wars icon Luke Skywalker.

In the finale episode titled "The Rescue", the famed Jedi master was the person who answered Grogu's call in the temple and aided Mando and his crew against the Dark Troopers.

His comeback was so well-executed that fans excused the show's use of a CGI'd Mark Hamill face on another actor's body. To be fair, a lot of us predicted ahead of Chapter 16 that a Luke cameo will indeed take place and even though we all practically saw it coming from a galaxy away, it was still a goosebump-inducing moment and a welcome return at that.

However, Skywalker's epic return wasn't actually part of the plan and according to series creator Jon Favreau, the story just wrote itself and unfolded right before their eyes. In a recent conversation with The Writers Guild of America West, the acclaimed Marvel director revealed: "No. The story unfolded as I wrote it. The Mandalorian inherits a great deal from existing Star Wars stories, and when I write, that context is always a consideration. It became clear that, within the established continuity, certain things were likely to transpire."

Favreau also shared that he and Dave Filoni have creative freedom with the show. "We have a tremendous amount of freedom afforded to us because of the gap in time between the films. Dave Filoni and I are in constant discussion regarding how each story choice is impacted by and would impact, existing Star Wars material."

I think we've already established the fact that the Favreau and Filoni connection is one formidable team and a lot of people would agree that they were able to pretty much reinvigorate the entire Star Wars franchise with just one show that doesn't even take place during the present timeline. It's safe to assume at this point that the duo will be sticking around to work on more Star Wars-related projects in the future and I gotta say, it's a huge win for everyone.

All episodes of The Mandalorian are available for streaming on Disney+.
