The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has finally arrived to much fanfare and understandably so. As early as its premiere episode, the new Marvel Cinematic Universe series already brought out the big guns and surprised Marvel fans with an appearance from a very familiar face.

Episode 1, titled "New World Order" revolves around Sam Wilson's stunning decision that he is not taking on the Captain America mantle, a role that was personally given to him by Steve Rogers himself. In the opening sequences of the said episode, we see The Falcon turning over the vibranium shield to the Department of Defense. We later see a cameo appearance from James Rhodes aka War Machine who gives Sam a little pep talk following his life-changing choice.

Naturally, MCU fans were delighted to see Rhodey back in the franchise and some of them were actually surprised to see him return. Not a lot of people are aware of this but Don Cheadle confirmed his involvement in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in early February. Now, while I don't think he's meant to stick around for a few more episodes, it makes all the sense in the world for him to appear on the show considering his ties with the government.

This appearance from Cheadle also opens the door wide open for another potential crossover event when his own series Armor Wars finally hits Disney+ sometime in 2022. Now, going back to the series, it'll be interesting to see how Sam responds to the government appointing a new Captain America in John Walker because obviously, he didn't see that one coming.

It's also quite intriguing why the Department of Defense didn't just try to convince Sam into taking up the role even after he turned it down instead of giving the honor to someone who is a complete unknown. Their motive still remains unclear at this point so we'll just have to stick around to see what happens next.

The debut episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now streaming on Disney+.
