One of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood is ending his illustrious career which spans almost seven decades. Big screen legend Michael Caine has announced that he's retiring from acting with his latest film Best Sellers set to be his final outing in Hollywood. Caine started his career in 1953 and has starred in acclaimed projects like The Italian Job, Inception, Interstellar, and Now You See Me among others but he is best known by a lot of fans for his role as Bruce Wayne's trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy.

Speaking on the BBC Radio program Kermode and Mayo to promote his new film with Aubrey Plaza, the 88-year-old actor opened up about his decision to step away from the limelight. According to Caine, one of his reasons for wanting to retire is a "spine problem which affects [his] legs". He also cited the COVID-19 pandemic halting a lot of projects as one of the turning points for his career decision.

He explains: "Funnily enough, it has turned out to be what is my last part really. Because I haven't worked for two years, and I have a spine problem which affects my legs so I can't walk very well, so… And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and were successful, so I'm now not an actor, I'm a writer. Which is lovely, because as an actor you have to get up at half past six in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you start writing without leaving the bed!"

Caine added: "I think it would be [my last picture], yeah. There haven't been any offers honestly for two years, because nobody's been making any movies I wanna do. Also, you know I'm 88. There's not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man that's 88, you know?"

I mean, Caine has nothing left to prove in the industry and if he wants to move away from acting permanently, there's literally zero shame in that. I'm just so glad that many of us were able to witness and experience his acting brilliance and quite frankly, he'll go down in history as one of the best to ever do it.

Caine recently starred in Christopher Nolan's Tenet.
