Star Trek Veteran Kate Mulgrew to Return as Captain Janeway in Prodigy

Nickelodeon's upcoming expansion of the Star Trek Universe via the spinoff series Star Trek: Prodigy just got some serious backup as a veteran cast member in Kate Mulgrew has now been confirmed to reprise her role as Captain Janeway in the highly anticipated animated series. The news was announced by CBS Studios during the virtual Star Trek panel at New York Comic-Con and Mulgrew was also present at the online spectacle.

Expressing her excitement over the forthcoming project, Jane shared: "I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can't wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me."

Sharing more about Mulgrew's casting, the show's executive producer Alex Kurtzman said: "Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough' by the doubters but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she."

Other details about the project have yet to be announced but this is great news and a huge win especially for long-time fans of the Star Trek saga. The franchise seems to be getting bigger and bigger by the day. The upcoming CG-animated series is geared towards young fans and will follow the exploits of a group of young teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it on their adventures. Of course, considering how seasoned and well-versed Captain Janeway is, she would be more than capable of mentoring the next generation of heroes in the franchise.
