Sonic the Hedgehog Ends the MCU's Streak as Biggest Superhero Film of 2020

We've come to a point where we just have to accept the fact that Marvel films are the undisputed box office champs and it doesn't come as a surprise anymore how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has managed to dominate cinemas every single year since the franchise's inception but you know what they say, all good things must come to an end and that's exactly what happened to the MCU's 10-year hot streak which has officially been broken by an unlikely film.

Paramount Pictures' live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film successfully dethroned the MCU to become this year's biggest superhero flick. Released last February, Sonic earned over 300 million at the worldwide box office by the end of its theatrical run. Of course, we all know that the film only won by default since Marvel Studios wasn't able to release highly anticipated projects such as Black Widow and Eternals this year but hey, a win is still a win, I guess.

Taking nothing away from the video game movie, Sonic the Hedgehog's unexpected success can be attributed to the fact that the studio actually listened to its fans following the backlash Sonic's original character design garnered. It's also a pretty fun movie that's why a sequel has already been greenlit. However, with Wonder Woman 1984's December release right around the corner, holding on to the feat would be a huge task but of course, it will still depend on if the Gal Gadot film indeed premieres later this year. Let's see what happens next.

Going back to the MCU, Black Widow has been pushed back to 2021.
