Say what you will about the third film but it can't be denied that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films are still regarded by a lot of fans today as some of the best, if not the best live-action interpretation of arguably Marvel's flagship superhero. Over the years, we've heard interesting bits of behind-the-scenes information regarding the trilogy headlined by Tobey Maguire but we've never truly known the director's motivation for taking on the project.

Now, almost two decades since the original Spider-Man film came out, the beloved director is finally sharing the reason why he decided to direct the fan-favorite film. Responding to a fan on Reddit (via ComicBookMovie) who asked why he decided to helm the trilogy, Raimi explains: "I directed the first Spider-Man film because I was such a huge fan of Stan Lee's brilliant character. Peter Parker and Spider-Man were an important part of my teenage years. I thought it was very moving how much he sacrificed for others. How hard he worked to protect innocent people. And all the while had to take care of his Aunt May and do his homework to boot."

He continued. "His self-sacrifice resonated with me. He was truly a good person. We can identify with Characters in a comprehensible story. Stories of heroes, like Peter Parker, remind us of what we are capable of. Maybe you're one of those people that like to be reminded of the good you are capable of. Now get out there and do something about it."

I think we can all agree that Raimi's legacy will forever be etched in Marvel history and now, he has the opportunity to create a new one as he's been tapped to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which marks his grand Marvel comeback after 13 long years. I would assume that the pressure is on for the director considering it's the MCU we're dealing with but I'm pretty confident that he'll blow us away.

Meanwhile, speaking of the web-slinger, Tom Holland returns in Spider-Man: No Way Home which is scheduled for release in December.
