Robert Pattinson Points Out Fans are Easily Triggered by His Version of Batman

The DC film universe is set to change everything we think we know about the caped crusader but for the number of fans excited about Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman film, there are some who are still on the fence about it simply because of lead star Robert Pattinson's acting resume who is oftentimes associated with the Twilight saga.

Although Pattinson was able to change the minds of some of his skeptics following the much-talked-about release of The Batman's official trailer last year, there are still some who choose to criticize his take on the Dark Knight even though the film hasn't come out yet. To the ex-Harry Potter star, the criticism surrounding his version of arguably DC's most popular comic book character is silly.

"Battinson" even claims that this is the first time people have cared about the role he plays which is baffling considering he's already starred in two high-profile franchises. In an interview with Terry Gross of the Fresh Air radio show, the actor opens up about the fan criticism, claiming that people are easily triggered when he talks about Batman.

He explains: "I mean, I've got a lot of thoughts. Well, it's funny, like, doing - I've done so many movies where, you know, I play these sort of partially monstrous characters. And whenever I've been promoting them, you know, normally, no one cares what you say about it. And I've just noticed every single time I say one sentence about Batman, there's this massive - I'm offending swathes of Batman fans."

He then went on to say that there have been several iterations of the character so there shouldn't be an issue with him taking on the role. "But, I mean, it's kind of - I mean, the interesting thing about Batman itself is that you can basically - it's been played in so many different ways. The comics cover so much ground. The movies cover so much ground. I mean, if you're going on the kind of - if you're trying to play a historically accurate Batman, I mean, you could literally play anything. So I guess it's kind of what Matt Reeves is directing and kind of wants to go for."

I totally agree with Pattinson's sentiments as the Batman lore has changed over time. And let's not kid ourselves, he isn't the first actor who received backlash for taking on the role. The previous Batman actors that have all come before him — from Micheal Keaton to Ben Affleck have all received criticism for it but in the end, they were able to change the fans' perception. I'm confident that Pattinson will be able to do the same.

The Batman hits cinemas in 2022.
