The highly-anticipated film remake of Mortal Kombat hits HBO Max this week and judging by the stuff we've. However, despite the excitement fans are feeling for the project, a lot of them can't help but question the exclusion of an iconic Mortal Kombat character. We're talking about the fan-favorite Johnny Cage whose conspicuous absence from the 2021 version of the film still remains a huge mystery to a lot of people.

While a lot of people are bewildered by Warner Bros.' decision not to include Cage, there are still fans who are under the impression that WB is just keeping his appearance in the film as a major surprise. We hate to break it to you but apparently, that is actually not the case. Now, you may be wondering, what's the studio's reason behind it? Let's try to break it down for you.

The creators of the new Mortal Kombat film knew right off the bat that fans would be asking questions about Johnny Cage and his potential involvement in the project and in fact, producer Todd Garner has previously addressed the matter. Garner pretty much confirmed that we won't be seeing Johnny Cage in the film and as it turns out, they have a pretty valid reason.

Which Mortal Kombat Character Are You? Take the quiz!

In one of his recent interviews (via ScreenRant), Garner explained: "Johnny Cage is obviously the elephant in the room, and there's a number of reasons why Johnny Cage was problematic in this particular movie out of the gate. One, he's a very big personality, right? He needs his own space. It's very hard to just throw him in a movie, like I said, with Kano."

He would then add that Johnny Cage would be a better fit for the sequel. "So, taking him out was very easy not only for the movie but for the sequel. I want to make a sequel, and I've now got Johnny Cage, which hasn't been used in the first one. So, I have a big stick and carrot that maybe they'll let me have a Johnny Cage real presence in the second one."

Garner makes a pretty good argument about the character and considering the remake is already "reintroducing" fans to a lot of characters and making way for new ones, someone like Johnny Cage who has a larger-than-life persona would easily overshadow the other guys. If anything, this tells you that they have major plans for the fan-favorite character but of course, that would depend on the success and reception for the upcoming Mortal Kombat film.

Mortal Kombat hits HBO Max tomorrow, April 23.
