Fans went absolutely ballistic when rumors began swirling last September that Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise was being eyed by Marvel Studios to play Iron Man in Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Okay, before anyone rolls their eyes, let's just make one thing perfectly clear: no, he is not going to replace Robert Downey Jr. as the Avengers' co-leader. Tom was reportedly offered a role in the film as an alternate universe Tony Stark because... Multiverse.
A lot of you are well aware by now regarding early rumors claiming that the Top Gun actor was actually Marvel Studios' original choice to lead the Marvel Cinematic Universe over a decade ago and although he's previously denied it, saying that he wasn't even approached for the project, that didn't stop diehards from imagining a world with him as Iron Man, especially now that his name is popping up in the conversation once again.
Now, this new fan art is creating an entirely different Marvel universe and I gotta say, it has my curiosity tickled. Digital artist @artoftimetravel shared his astonishing piece on Instagram which features Tom Cruise assembling his own Earth's Mightiest Heroes from another earth and timeline. The epic image also includes John Krasinski as Captain America, Alexander Skarsgård as Thor, Emily Blunt as Black Widow, Jensen Ackles as Hawkeye, and Edward Norton as Hulk and if you still haven't guessed it, these are the actors who came so close to becoming part of the MCU. Well, except obviously for Norton who initially had his shot in 2008's Incredible Hulk before being replaced by Mark Ruffalo. Check out the awesome artwork here:
It's always fun to look back and talk about all the what could've been scenarios, especially in the MCU but that's not to say the Avengers that we ended up getting isn't didn't get the job done because quite frankly, in my opinion, they're by far the best superhero film ensemble we've seen to date. But with the upcoming MCU phase diving deep into the bowels of the multiverse, all these what-ifs could finally be realized and it would be a treat to see them come to life. I know you're excited about the idea too as much as I am. We'll see how Kevin Feige and his crew will handle things.
That being said, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to begin production in November.
