The future of the Cara Dune character hangs in the balance following Gina Carano's controversial ousting from Lucasfilm. Following the confirmation that the actress will no longer be involved in The Mandalorian Season 3, fans have been speculating what Disney's next move will be.

Naturally, there are two options: kill the character off and leave fans without any explanation as the new chapter opens, or just hire a new actress who would breathe new life into the role. Apparently, Disney is leaning towards the latter and a new report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Season 3 would introduce Carano's official replacement.

For how long though? THR's unidentified source claims that the decision to keep the character in the story is for "merchandising purposes" only which could mean that Cara Dune could potentially get written off from the show in the near future. Of course, that would be the most logical way to go about things as fans will only be reminded of Carano regardless if a new actress portrays the Cara Dune role.

Update: In a confusing turn of events, THR has apparently updated their editorial writeup and claims that another source told them that Lucasfilm isn't planning on recasting Cara Dune. So, what's the deal, really?

Now, considering the fact that Dune has already been established as one of the more important characters in the show, it would be a shame if we don't get to see her in a more prominent role in the upcoming seasons of the hit Star Wars spinoff series especially after her history as a former shock trooper and her involvement in the Galactic Civil War was kinda unwrapped.

The Mandalorian's Season 3 is expected to begin filming in April.
