The entire creative direction of the Black Panther franchise was drastically altered following the untimely passing of lead star Chadwick Boseman last year and for months, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been wondering how Kevin Feige and his team will handle the situation. Some fans suggest that T'Challa should remain as the main protagonist of the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever but the Marvel Studios head pretty much confirmed that they're leaving Chadwick's legacy the way it is.
The entire situation caused major speculation that the sequel will see a new Wakandan hero rise from the shadows and Feige's statement also seems to solidify that Black Panther 2's plot will revolve around the crowning of a new Black Panther. Shuri is the current favorite amongst fans to become T'Challa's successor but other names like M'Baku and even the deceased Killmonger have also entered the debate.
Now, actress Letitia Wright's latest Marvel deal may indicate that she's actually set for an upgraded role in the franchise. According to Bleeding Cool, Wright recently signed a contract extension with Marvel Studios which would see her reprise her role in multiple undisclosed projects. Naturally, the renewed partnership between the actress and Marvel led a lot of fans to believe that she'll indeed be the next Black Panther.
Pretty much all but confirm that shuri is taking the marble of black panther with the news Wright signed on to do “many movies”— Volunteer Fireman (@MikeyDusse) August 31, 2021
Sounds like Shuri will be the new Black Panther— (@JVR24_) August 31, 2021
Shuri as the new Black Panther sounds beautiful. We’d finally have a Black woman playing a main superhero too.— Haaan (@hanaws9) August 31, 2021
Shuri is going to be the next Black Panther, obvi. Right?— Kéwé (@heykewe) August 31, 2021
Look's like Shuri's probably going to be the new Black Panther then.— ThatOneDCNerd (@ThatOneDCNerd1) August 31, 2021
This is a little disappointing TBH, I was kind of hoping they would go with someone less obvious like maybe Okoye or Nakia. Not to mention Shuri hasn't really shown any sort of combat skill. https://t.co/gnN9taaH9r
It's also been assumed that Wright's Shuri is the frontrunner to take over the BLACK PANTHER mantle because it happens in the comics. Extending a contract could mean a lot of things as well.— Christopher Marc (@_ChristopherM) August 31, 2021
hiding her costume under a black hoodie, being injured while filming a stunt, signing a long-term, multi-movie contract… letitia wright is black panther. in this essay i will pic.twitter.com/gpwbdhp8Hr— neo (@neogalaxite) August 31, 2021

Considering Shuri has always been the sentimental favorite to become the next Wakandan hero, it makes absolute sense for her to assume the role now that T'Challa is gone. And let's be honest, if there's one individual who can carry the torch and continue T'Challa and King T'Chaka's legacies, it's definitely Shuri.
