To a lot of comic book fans, director James Gunn can be considered a cinematic visionary, and thanks to him, the Guardians of the Galaxy was turned from D-list superheroes to an overnight sensation. But you know what they say, all good things must come to an end and by the looks of things, Gunn may be on his way out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after he's finished working on his final commitments in the franchise — that includes the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

In a recent interview with the New York Times to promote his upcoming DC Extended Universe flick The Suicide Squad, Gunn stayed firm with his previous statement and said that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could in fact be his final outing in the MCU. James didn't exactly elaborate but he doesn't seem interested in doing a fourth installment. He explains: "I have no clue what I'm going to do. For me, Guardians 3 is probably the last one. I don't know about doing it again."

I don't know about you but Gunn's initial firing from Marvel Studios three years ago may have affected his working relationship with the studio and his desire to do more films in the MCU. Either that or maybe he just genuinely feels that his work in the billion-dollar franchise is over. But of course, you can never say never in this industry and next thing we know, James could end up having a change of heart.

Meanwhile, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad hits cinemas and HBO Max on August 5, 2021.
