It's safe to say that a lot of fans were either sleeping on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse before or didn't have the highest of expectations for it upon its release in 2018 but much to the surprises of webheads all across the world, or the multiverse, rather, the Sony Pictures project ended up becoming a massive success with a lot of people even hailing it as one of the best Spider-Man films out there.
The critical and box office triumph of the animated blockbuster gave Sony enough confidence to create their own Spidey film franchise outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and unsurprisingly, the studio immediately greenlit a sequel. So far, we know very little about Into the Spider-Verse 2 besides the fact that it'll see the arrival of Miguel O'Hara aka Spider-Man 2099.
The futuristic Spidey may not be the only iteration of the web-slinger we should be excited about as a new rumor suggests that a fan-favorite Spider-Man actor will also be joining the sequel to reprise his role. According to The Hashtag Show, Christopher Daniel Barnes is in final talks with Sony to join the upcoming film.
Barnes is best-known for his voice work in the iconic Spider-Man: The Animated Series from the 1990s which undoubtedly defined a generation of Spider-Man fans. However, the report clarifies that Barnes' version of Spidey won't be part of the film's actual plot much like the other characters like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker, and Spider-Ham and instead will just serve as one of the cameos for the film.
Of course, take this rumor with a huge grain of salt but considering Sony has gone all-in with the first Spider-Verse film, the idea of Barnes coming back to reprise his role even for just a small part still sounds exciting. And apart from the film's concept of bringing in multiple Spider-Men from different dimensions, the film also serves as a major callback to the past iterations of the iconic Marvel character.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is scheduled for release in 2022.
