Fans Call Elizabeth Olsen Problematic, Blames Actress for 'Whitewashing' Wanda Maximoff

Elizabeth Olsen has been turning a lot of heads with her portrayal of Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch and a lot of people believe that she was cast perfectly in the role. Off-camera, Olsen has always had the reputation of being a genuinely likable person in general which is why fans all across the globe adore her.

Surprisingly enough, the equally famous sister of the Olsen twins Mary-Kate and Ashley isn't exempt from controversy and we've proven that over the last couple of years. We reported a few weeks back that Elizabeth was dragged into an issue by fans for her use of the term "gypsy", something that is deemed derogatory by Romani people.

Back in September, fans also criticized her for not publicly grieving the loss of her good friend and Marvel co-star Chadwick Boseman. The backlash was too intense that it forced the actress to leave social media for good.

Now, Olsen is being labeled as "problematic" by some fans, and this time around, they're dragging the WandaVision star for "whitewashing" the Wanda Maximoff character. In the comics, Maximoff was originally part-Romani, and avid comic book fans are irked by the fact that an American actress portrays the character. Check out some of the reactions here:

I'm not trying to defend Elizabeth but this whole "cancel culture" thing is really getting out of hand. First off, her use of the "gypsy" term may have meant something else entirely and not in a malicious kind of way. Secondly, I don't think it's her problem that Marvel Studios "whitewashed" Wanda Maximoff in the MCU. She's just doing her job and quite frankly, I couldn't care less if her portrayal is 100% spot-on as long as she delivers.

Elizabeth Olsen appears in WandaVision, streaming on Disney+.
