Much like WandaVision, Marvel Studios' second offering for Phase 4 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was also home to several outrageous fan theories and one persistent rumor that has been the subject of debate within the fandom has something to do with Bucky Barnes' sexuality. Following Episode 1, Marvel conspiracists came up with a wild theory suggesting that the former Winter Soldier is actually bisexual.

As the series progressed, the extreme chemistry between Bucky and Sam Wilson was just too hard to ignore and a lot of fans even felt that there was sexual tension between the two. Now, the series doesn't actually confirm whether or not Bucky is gender fluid. However, the show's director Kari Skogland immediately debunked fan theories questioning Bucky's sexual orientation.

In an interview with Variety, Skogland finally ended the debate about Bucky being bisexual. Laughing off the theory about Bucky and the tiger photos he encountered on dating apps, she said: "I think we just thought of it as an oddity of the times because he's so confused by it. Because don't forget, he's 106 years old. So he's just confused by the whole thing."

Skogland later clarified that there's no sexual tension between the two despite what some people may think. "It's really loving, right? They love each other — in the end. They don't love each other at the beginning, but they come to a friendly place where they love each other. So I'm not really sensitive to masculinity as any kind of barrier between that love, or how it should manifest. I'm completely fluid when it comes to any of that. So there's no defined sexuality to any of it. So it's, really, I think, just affection."

Bucky and Sam have come a long way from being Steve Rogers' right-hand men to becoming bonafide heroes in their own right and the growth of their bond and friendship over the course of the franchise was a joy to witness. And now that they're no longer living under the shadow of the former Captain America, things are looking up for the MCU's dynamic duo.
