Avid fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are well aware that Eternals isn't Gemma Chan's first rodeo in the franchise. On one rare occasion, the actress is among the shortlist of actors who have been given the privilege of playing two different characters in the MCU.
To those unaware, Chan actually portrayed Minn-Erva, one of Carol Danvers' Kree teammates turned bitter enemy in Captain Marvel but we can all agree that the character didn't really do that much in the film.
There's no denying that Chan's initial MCU casting was a massive missed opportunity considering how brilliant of an actress she actually is. This is why it doesn't come as a surprise how Marvel Studios went out of their way to give her a brand new role, and an upgraded one at that. Now, she is set to play one of the lead characters Sersi in the highly-anticipated Eternals. In a new interview with Empire, the British star opened up about the golden opportunity bestowed upon her.
"I feel very lucky to have been welcomed back into the MCU so quickly after my first appearance; the reception has been very warm,” Gemma tells the magazine. “I feel fortunate because we had a lot of crossover in the crew between the two films so there was continuity in that sense, but these are completely different projects, in completely different times, the characters are different."
I'm glad Kevin Feige and his crew welcomed Gemma Chan with arms wide open and gave the actress another shot at becoming a part of the billion-dollar franchise. Recasting her as Sersi was definitely the right call and I'm guessing Marvel Studios ultimately came to a realization that a star of Chan's caliber is too good to be relegated to supporting roles. I'm totally stoked to see what she brings to the table now that she's transitioning from villain to hero.
Eternals will hit cinemas this November.
