Captain America: Civil War was a pretty solid Marvel film overall but it had one controversial scene that a lot of fans are still mad about today. One sequence in the film shows Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter sharing an intimate moment in front of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as they prepare to leave Germany en route to Siberia. Of course, fans weren't thrilled about the idea of Rogers kissing a woman who happens to be Peggy Carter's niece.

As weird as it sounds, it may have looked like the Russo Brothers-directed film was setting up a romance angle between Steve and Sharon but ultimately, no such thing ever happened and the controversial "kiss" has gone unaddressed since.

Now, five years following the release of the third Captain America film, actress Emily VanCamp is opening up about the backlash she received for doing the said scene. VanCamp, who made her triumphant MCU return in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier recently spoke with Variety to address the matter.

Admitting that she's aware of the backlash the scene received, the Agent 13 actress explains: "I know! There was quite a bit of backlash about that. With Sharon, it was always trying to fit her in and these movies are just too big, and it's completely understandable. To get to see who she's become over this long period of time, and independent of Captain America as we know him is really interesting to me. The intrigue for me was to see who is Sharon now."

While the image of Cap smooching with his first love's niece is hard to erase from our minds, Sharon Carter is now moving on from her past life, and Episode 3 of the hit Marvel spin-off series pretty much proved that. It also seems like Sharon will be playing a more significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward which is great considering she's one of the characters who were criminally misused in the franchise.

The latest episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is now streaming on Disney+.
