Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds has long gotten over the fact that his Green Lantern film was a hot mess and didn't really live up to the hype and expectations when it released back in 2011. These days, he's enjoying his career elsewhere, most notably in the Marvel Universe as the fourth-wall-breaking outlaw. And to prove that he's over his GL phase, he would even roast his own portrayal of Hal Jordan every chance he could which somehow has remained a mystery all these years among comic book fans.
In a press interview for his upcoming action-comedy film Free Guy, Reynolds clarified that although he'd often crack jokes, he's only making fun of himself and not the people behind the DC film. He explains: "I think it's more about just laughing at myself, not laughing at other people, necessarily, that are involved in a project but laughing at myself and my own contribution to that failure or however you want to characterize it. It was just something that I thought was worth examining, you know? And in examining it, you take that energy that is - typically, maybe it's hurtful or maybe it's something that's dragging you down - and you end up creating a sort of mental Judo with it. You're using its energy against it and creating something positive out of it."
He later revealed that the famous Deadpool joke where he takes a jab at Green Lantern's CGI costume was actually his idea, just to mess with the character a little bit. He continued: "I wrote it into the Deadpool script, I think where my character says something like, 'Please don't make this suit green or animated,' when he's being shoved into the superhero factory or whatever and I noticed that it felt good to shine a light on that for a second. So I don't know, it's just something I've always done, but the most significant thing that's ever happened in my career is laughing at myself always. Like, since the start of the work. And there's plenty there to laugh at ... Everybody has their own, you lay in bed at night and you think, 'Oh God, this thing I did was so awful or silly or ridiculous.' I think that's got this fuel for lots of stuff."
Even though his first superhero venture didn't turn out as great as he hoped it to be, fate still had a "marvelous" plan for Ryan and thankfully, he was able to turn things around with his portrayal of Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. Speaking of the character, there's been talk within the Marvel fandom when and how he should enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Something tells me though that we might have to wait a little longer to see Mr. Pool back in action, considering how stacked the MCU's lineup currently is. Regardless, his arrival to the billion-dollar franchise will surely be a game-changer.
Meanwhile, Free Guy is eyeing a December 2020 release.
