The Twitterverse felt the Force today after legendary Star Wars character Darth Revan became a hot trending topic on the social media platform. Revan is a character who happens to be both a Sith Lord and a Jedi and is no longer considered canon to the universe but thanks to the iconic video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, he was able to gain a cult following over the years with his brooding and intriguing persona.
Now, one would assume that Revan is trending on Twitter because fans are celebrating the KOTOR character but unfortunately, that's not the case. Apparently, there's an ongoing issue within the Star Wars fandom that has something to do with gatekeeping. Turns out, some hardcore fans of the franchise are displaying superiority over other "casual" fans for not knowing who Revan is.
Other people who are just learning about the character's existence in the Star Wars universe are also being shamed just because they have no idea who he is. Check out some of the reactions below:
Me: "Oh sweet, Revan is trending! I hope it's something KOTOR related!"— Darth Yeetious (@DarthYeetious) April 14, 2021
*Its just gatekeeping bullshit again*
As someone who’s been a massive fan of Revan (duh) for a decade and Star Wars for my whole life, I can confirm this is total bs— Revan1207 | The RVN1207 Page (@thervn1207page) April 13, 2021
I don’t care if you became a fan decades ago or two weeks ago, whether you know every EU story or nothing about it. All fans’ love for SW is valid. https://t.co/O192ie0wrB
No offense to anyone who loves KOTOR but I’m living proof you can be really into Star Wars for upwards of 4 decades and know next to nothing about Revan.— Mark’s Forever Obi-Wan ? ?️? (@djmmarquis) April 14, 2021

I promise you you don't have to know a twenty year old video game character to be a Star Wars fan, no matter how great she is. pic.twitter.com/UXzMeASi2e— Wesley (@SskeerMadness) April 13, 2021
I'm going to be 41 next month. When I was a toddler I slept in Yoda pajamas. I've loved Star Wars my whole life. I've never played a SW video game, I've watched almost none of the cartoons. I have no idea who Revan is and I don't give a shit.
There's more than one kind of fan. https://t.co/LUECS0Wh19— Steve Shives (@steve_shives) April 14, 2021
I saw Return Of The Jedi opening week and I'm "baby Yoda is so cute, what's a Revan?"— Steele Wars Podcast (@SteeleWars) April 13, 2021
It must be frustrating to think you have some fan ownership over one of the most popular things ever. https://t.co/naG4yVIi9h
Lots of Revan talk on Star Wars twitter today...— Alex | Haruspis (@haruspis) April 14, 2021
They're cool 'n' all, but if today's agenda is to girlboss, gatekeep, and gaslight, then I have a character for you! pic.twitter.com/1Jwb5OOQr1
Some Star Wars fans are gatekeeping people for not knowing who Revan is. Because of course they are
God this fandom is a dumpster fire— Riley Constantine (@biologicalriley) April 14, 2021
The moment I see "Revan" come up in popular conversation I know it will involve some Star Wars gatekeeping nonsense. Any affection I might have felt for the character has been killed by toxic fandom.— Jeremiah McCoy, Wizard of Disdain. (@Technoir) April 14, 2021
I mean, I kinda get where the "gatekeeper fans" are coming from and they're just really passionate about the franchise but I've always believed that you don't have to know everything about something to call yourself an actual fan. As long as you enjoy the product and support it, that's actually more than enough. Being a fan shouldn't be that complicated.
